Student unions associated to Left Alliance have burnt an effigy of Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba to protest against the price hike of petroleum products.

Meanwhile, the police have intervened in the protest and fired two rounds of teargas shells to disperse the protestors.

Following the intervention, police have clashed with demonstrators in which one student sustained injuries. The injured has been identified as student leader Mahesh Bartaula. Bartaula has been taken to hospital for treatment.

On January 1, Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC), a state-owned oil monopoly, had hiked the price of petroleum products for the third time within a month.

With the decision on price hike, petrol will cost Rs 102 per liter, diesel and kerosene Rs 89 per liter and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) Rs 1375 while turbine fuel will cost Rs 90 per liter for domestic airlines.

On December 19, NOC had hiked the price of petroleum products for the second time in 11 days.

Similarly, NOC had increased the price of all petroleum products on December 8, a day after the completion of the second phase of the elections of House of Representatives and Provincial Assemblies.
