Federal police have seized some 2000 litres of the drug GBL which was hidden inside car wash shampoo containers and was allegedly destined to hit Sydney's streets in time for next month's Mardi Gras parade.

A man has been arrested after authorities seized 2000 litres of a drug nicknamed 'coma in a bottle'.

Authorities on Friday said a 30-year-old Warwick Farm man has been arrested after the drugs, worth up to $7 million, were seized following a tip-off.

They were allegedly hidden inside the shampoo containers and smuggled into Australia on a ship which had travelled from China to Sydney, the Australian Federal Police and Australian Border Force said during a joint press conference at Port Botany.

The bust is the second largest haul of GBL - often nicknamed "coma in a bottle" - in Australia and the biggest since 2008.

GBL can cause irrational behaviour, seizures and potentially death.

The 30-year-old is expected to face a Sydney court on Friday afternoon or Saturday morning.
